  • DNS Benchmark v2 Release 5 with Consultant License

    If you own any earlier release of our DNS Benchmark you may immediately download its release #5 replacement. Running an earlier release will detect the new release and help you upgrade.

    Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use. The biggest change, as seen in the image above, is that the DNS Benchmark now has a traditional Windows application menu to more fully expose its many features. This release is also "Consultant License Aware" and GRC will now issue a Consultant version when owners have previously purchased four "Personal Use" licenses. If you have previously purchased four DNSB licenses, or if you wish to upgrade your "Personal Use" license to Consultant, GRC's purchase process will direct you through that process.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

I am trying to keep my window 10 pro updated properly. I delay my updates for a week to watch for major problems, and then install. The cumulative update from September has failed to install. Looking on the web there is little help, though I have tried using Spinrite level 3 to check for errors or weak sectors and reinstalled Windows using the Windows Media Tool. Neither changed anything. So I am looking for help here. Model INTEL SSDSC2KW512G8 is my Windows drive on a System Model X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING Motherboard and a AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor, 3701 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s). Windows update gets 10 to 15% done then trys to install and then fails. and gives the above errors. I haven't tried the disabling in Command line suggestions, but all comments I have seen says that does not work. As I said above, I did reinstall windows using the WIndows Media Tool, but that had no effect. I have made sure that all my drivers are up to date, and that the drive is in working order using Spinrite. Any help is much apprechiated.

Unfortunately it appears the error number is indicative of the "Windows Update" files themselves being broken. There are lots of suggestions online around attempting repairs. The most common appear to be, make sure you restart and try again. Following that, try the Windows Update troubleshooter (in Settings, you can search for it, search for troubleshoot and choose the additional troubleshooters and look at the bottom of the first part of the list.) You could go to Microsoft's Catalogue Library and download them as standalone update files. But even then I doubt it will work. You will end up going around in circles with one standalone update failure message after the other.

With W7 there wasn't any of these Windows Update problems due to Windows Update Service Stack issues.

It looks as if you have filesystem corruption and it's this that's likely the cause of your Windows Update woes.

Normally, for your problem you would use DISM and SFC to no avail trying to fix filesystem corruption.

The other option is an in-place upgrade. I have a W10 Home version that goes all the way up to March 2026 and has most of the updates which should fix your problem.

Dame, I've just seen that you have W10 Pro.

I really don't like Windows 10 downloading everything in one go and then installing everything in one go. For W7 you could be selective and do them one at a time.

How far in the future does your W10 Pro go to? I could try and make you one. I'm not sure how long it would take to upload. But you are welcome to it.

My W10 Home (March 2026) fixed the same problem my mate had as you have and I tried everything remotely. In the end, I talked him through an in-place upgrade and not only did it fix the Windows Update issues but also others issues too. Only the latest in-place upgrade sorted it.

I've just checked. My W10 ISO will work for Home, Pro and Education etc.

The W10 ISO comes as 30 WinRAR files 250MB (7.7GB). Once uploaded, I'll see if I can WinRAR extract it to a single ISO in the cloud.
