  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I just wanted to put in a quick note about some Windows Programming courses. I think first seen Pavel Yosifovich’s name on the cover of the Windows Internals books and then later I bought his Windows Programming books on leanpub. The problem is I am always too busy and always have to schedule my time 7 days a week. With that said I love the books he has written I literally get an adrenaline rush reading them. When I found out he made these video courses, it was like heaven. I purchased the first Windows Kernel Programming course and am still watching, I was lying in bed watching last night and I wanted so much to stay up and watch it, I could feel the adrenaline rush. I had to force myself to give up and go to sleep. For many of us with busy schedules, finding the time to read long texts on programming, coding, algorithms, and technology is general is not much of an option. Which is what makes these videos so great. They due cost, but in my opinion they are worth every penny. Finally deep windows internals is made that much more accessible! Anyone wanting to learn more about windows programming must get these!

It's awesome that Pavel's courses make deep Windows internals accessible—sounds like a perfect fit for anyone diving into Windows programming!

It sounds like you've found a real gem with these courses. I know how it is balancing a busy schedule with a "hunger" for knowledge. When I discovered HRDF claimable courses at a training provider in Malaysia, it was a game-changer for me, much like these video courses you're enjoying. What I mean to say is that investing in education that gives you that rush of learning is priceless.

Well it is true that I wanted to learn to program computers all the back to when I was in high school, but because of the nature of how education is in my state (Maine), that really was never an option. How long have you been listening to SN? I was listening since day one, but I never have listened to all of them. Fun fact, I once had a job interview for a company in Southern Maine and I studied quite a bit before going, while driving down I listened to SN, a few episode that I thought might be helpful. The interview was a written test all questions about networks, routers and operating systems. Few things about that 1) I ran out of paper answering the questions and 2) I solved some of their problems in my answers. (Some that that was Steve (not all of it)) Can you guess if I got hired? :) So, Pavel’s work is similar to Steve’s. But in all honestly these days I am more concerned with quality and making money. I am not always sure what people want. Anyway, if you think this HRDF courses are helpful, post a link.
