    If you own any earlier release of our DNS Benchmark you may immediately download its release #5 replacement. Running an earlier release will detect the new release and help you upgrade.

    Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use. The biggest change, as seen in the image above, is that the DNS Benchmark now has a traditional Windows application menu to more fully expose its many features. This release is also "Consultant License Aware" and GRC will now issue a Consultant version when owners have previously purchased four "Personal Use" licenses. If you have previously purchased four DNSB licenses, or if you wish to upgrade your "Personal Use" license to Consultant, GRC's purchase process will direct you through that process.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

Western Digital Hard Drives Speed Drops DRASTICALLY as you go down the drive

Here is the results from 2 identical Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 drives that were installed 3 years ago...

Got worried that something on the drives was failing. So ran it through SpinRite at level 4 hoping that would help... No problems found on the drives during the SpinRiting... Here's the ReadSpeed Results after the Level 4...

So this seems to be just the nature of the drives since both tests were identical and the drop off curve is consistent over both of the drives. Just found this interesting. Probably will shop around next time I purchase drives if this is a systemic Western Digital problem. Anyone else see this trend?

This is normal for Spinners. It is normal for HDD speed to decrease roughly 2:1 from 0% to 100%.

The track circumference decreases as the heads go from the outer edge (0%) to the center (100%). Smaller track circumference means less data per track, hence more tracks to read 1 GB data, hence more time, hence slower speed readings.

Your drives look healthy! :)

Also, some drives have weirdness if they are SMR drives, but yours are not.

Thanks for the education guys and responding! Nice to know that the drives are good. It's so interesting how the physical aspects for the drive affect the performance so much. Crazy.
Props to Steve for such a cool tool! Can't wait till SpinRite 6 comes out and instead of 17 Hours a drive at level 4 it'll be blazing fast and practical again!
