  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I purchased what i consider to be a reputable flash drive. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015CH1PJU) As soon as it arrived I checked it in Validrive and it reported the amount of space i expected (just under 128gb)

I have 51 GB of files to store on it

However i have moved 26.4 gb of the files over

it is is reporting as full when trying to copy any more files to it

Should I be returning this?
I'm going to format the drive and start fresh. see what happens this time ( i re ran validrive again and it still shows the same)

Is one of your files larger than 4 GB?

File size limitations on USB drives:

FAT32: Limits individual files to 4GB.
exFAT: Allows for much larger file sizes, up to the full capacity of the flash drive.
NTFS: Also supports very large file sizes.

Does Zipping the file, or reformatting the USB flash drive as exFAT or NTFS solve your challenge?

i don't know what it was before... this day and age i would expect it to be formated to exFAT... it has been now and i'm attempting the copies
again.

Most come formatted as FAT32, because they likely have a bulk formatter that has been around for a few years, and with the cost for buying a new formatter that can handle likely 200 plus drives at a time, they will carry on formatting as FAT32 and putting the same old image with the adware on it.

Purchased two 16 GB PNY USB 2.0 Flash Drives, when I run ValiDrive both report 32 GB - loaded one with 20 GB of Photos and was able to access all of them.

Interesting indeed. PNY is not noted for its quality. In this case PNY's QC is questionable as these 32 GB drives were mislabeled as 16 GB drives. I also note that they are no speed demons. :( I have two (2) older PNY's that are also very slow., but are otherwise OK

I would never buy PNY for myself nor recommend PNY. There are better alternatives available, but they will cost more than a cheap low quality PNY.
