  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

USB not booting on ASUS VivoBook running Windows 11 23H2

I made a USB Drive with BootAble, put the USB Drive in, held down the ESC key, (which is used to choose Boot Device)
Restarted Windows, USB Device came up in the list of Devices to choose: Pressed the Enter key, but it just flashes
quickly, and just comes back to the same screen! It just won't boot the USB Drive!!

If I put in Windows USB Drive, it starts up Windows Install, no problem! Any suggestions on this?
I'm not very good at forums, so hopefully I put this in the right place.

It sounds as if your ASUS is set to UEFI boot. If you go into the UEFI/BIOS settings, there may be an option to do "Legacy Boot" or CSM. That might allow BootAble to boot. Otherwise you will need to wait for SpinRite 7 which should be UEFI capable.

I guess I'll have to call ASUS since I don't see any setting in the UEFI to change it to BIOS.
There's a CRAP-LOAD of options in there!
I'm hoping someone on this forum will have this same Laptop and help me with this.

Thanks for reaching out anyway!

Legacy/CSM isn't available on many newer machines. You could try the steps in this article, but it looks like it's mostly for desktop motherboards.

I recommend checking to see if BitLocker is enabled before you change any BIOS/UEFI settings. If it is enabled, make sure you back up the recovery key!

Back to the drawing board! F7 does nothing. I hate to call ASUS, but that might be my only recourse.
Note: Bitlocker is not running.

I have an ASUS Zenbook 2024 and there is no Legacy/CSM. Calling ASUS will be pointless and a waste of time.

The closest you might get to booting a USB is to turn off Secure Boot. This allow my Ventoy USB to boot, but the Bootable.iso will not run, as expected.

I do not have the option to turn off secure boot. I'm going to use the auto-unattended method and see if that works.
Windoz's looks for a "little known" file called: autounattend.xml Search for this and you will find all about it.
