  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

As a stopgap until we get SR7.0 wouldn't it be great to boot a UEFI laptop into a mode where the internal drive could be mounted as an external drive on another system running SR6.1? Macs have had this for years (target disc mode). I'm sure there are some major technical hurdles but this should be pretty minimal software. We don't need options and graphics, just mount the drive to the USB port.

I wonder how much of this code could be written by ChatGPT ? I don't have the skills to take that code and test/debug/improve it. But maybe someone in this forum does.

From what I've heard, this feature doesn't work any more in more modern Macs.

USB is not the optimal way to use SpinRite 6.1. SpinRite doesn't have USB drivers, and the BIOS support is generally sub-optimal, and in some older BIOSes there are even fatal memory overwrite bugs with USB drives beyond a certain size. (So much so that SpinRite has specific restrictions to attempt to address these issues.)
