  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

anything I can do to quiet GRC.com software?
keeps me from buying DNSbenchmark.
I don't want another noisy program.

The Grinch says:
"And then - oh, the noise; oh, the noise, noise, noise, noise! That's one thing I hate: all the noise, noise, noise, noise!"
 
What noise? DNS Benchmark is 100% silent.

(SpinRite does use acoustic feedback to make some sounds, but can be easily silenced via a command line switch)
 
Every click on a button is accompanied with an audio file running mouse click sound.
Every start and completion event is signaled with audio "click".
Irritating. I turned this off on Windows95.

Definitely irritating to me.
 
I've heard DNSBench send a click to the speaker for every query - very
noisy, constant, until the Benchmark or Build Custom list is complete!

Resolution?

Exit and restart, and hope the speaker doesn't get caught by some
errant code ( presumably ).

It happens.
