  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Hello, I have a Samsung SSD 980 PRO 2.0 TB. I keep getting "this drive has stopped responding to commands" on my drive. I have tried to go passed it and it just keeps happening. My friend has the same motherboard and drive as I do, he was able to do his and he saw a big improvement over speed and issues with games crashing. I am just wondering if there is any way to fix this or maybe it's just a drive problem. I also tried doing a level 1 and 2, but same thing at the same first spot at least. Thanks.

Is this a NVMe drive of a SATA drive? Have you tried Samsung Magician on it. Some of their drives had firmware updates to fix problems, but I think that was more on the 990 models.

@sjcohen, By all means follow @PHolder's advice and try Samsung Magician to check for (and install) any available firmware update(s).

Then, if a firmware update is available, check the drive again after the firmware update is installed to see if it makes any difference.

Thank You both I will try that and yes it's a NVMe... Thanks again I will let you know how it works.

Thanks for giving me something to try, but this did not work still stops with the same error and count down. I do appreciate the help.

I have tried to go passed it and it just keeps happening.
Do you mean that you keep starting at 0% and letting SpinRite run until the drive stops responding at the same spot or do you mean that you tried starting SpinRite at a point past where it usually stops responding?

To start at a specific spot - Press the spacebar to select the drive to work on then press 'Enter'. On the next screen press the 'TAB' key to be able to select the starting and ending points for SpinRite to work on. Navigate with the arrow keys.

it stops at the same spot each time and I do go past it by starting at the Percent that it tells me. It will start again and then eventually it stops again (no long after) and so on. I had it stop so far 4 times. once at .665%, then at 3.88%, then at 3.91% and then finally again at 4.53%. then I gave up. It will always stop those percentages if I start over again.
