  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I'm a Spinrite 6 owner. Just wondering if the SR6.1 ISO is available? I did some looking around and searching and didn't find it.

I copied the SR6.1 image file to my Ventoy but it didn't work. I renamed the file to .iso and that also did not work.

Just curious if there will be an ISO of SR6.1 that I can copy to my Ventoy drive?

Hi @m3110w:

SpinRite v6.1's Windows app DOES create an ISO file. But, as @AlanD correctly noted, Ventoy and SpinRite are fundamentally incompatible. When the first Ventoy users encountered problems I brought myself up to speed with Ventoy and determined that there was nothing I was able to do to get Ventoy and SpinRite 6.1 to coexist.

However, during this work I discovered the alternative (and actually much more capable, powerful and free) "Easy2Boot" (https://easy2boot.xyz/) tool which will similarly boot .ISO files and is completely compatible with SpinRite v6.1.

Hi Steve,
Long time Security Now listener (haven't missed an episode since circa 2007) and happy Spinrite user/owner.

I am a few months behind on the show. I recently heard you say on the show that you reduced the size of Spinrite 6.1 ever so slightly so it would work with Ventoy.

- Is this outdated information?
- If no, I can't find an ISO option to download for Spinrite 6.1. Am I looking in the wrong places?

Thanks for all the great work you do, Steve 🙏

SpinRite is not compatible with Ventoy. It is compatible with Easy2Boot:

It is not currently possible to download an ISO of SpinRite. I think Steve said he may add that functionality to the website in the future. If you want an ISO, you'll have to run the EXE.

There is an IMG file available for download that can be written to a USB drive.

Thanks. That must have changed since Steve said he made that change to make it Ventoy compatible a number of episodes ago.
Thank you.
Yes, in a later episode he said he was mistaken in his ability to create Ventoy compatibility. He can't due to some conflict in how Ventoy allocates the DOS high memory area, so he recommended using Easy2Boot instead.

I have received my 6.1 notification and managed to dd the image to a USB stick as suggested for Linux only users. My issue is that I have my old almost air-gapped computer with a few similarly old hard disks, and based on the last SecurityNow episode likely to benefit from a maintenance run. My computer runs an old version of Ubuntu (that refuses to do-releaise-upgrade and unable to boot from USB sticks, it is not present in the bot options. It has a DVD-rewriter so I planned to "burn" the image to a writable CD, but neither brasero nor the linux iat utility recognise the spinrite image file. If I dd the usb stick file system to my own image file, will that be also illegible for the standard linux/ubuntu "CD writer" and converter apps? Is my only option of moving my hard disks to a more modern computer (that handles booting from USB sticks)? Thanks in advance!

spinrite image file
Sounds like the most expedient thing would be to enlist the help of another PC that runs Windows. Run SpinRite on that PC and it will give you the option to make an ISO file which you could then burn to CD to boot on your "air gapped" PC.

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't have a current windows, but have an old Win XP box (with no network access, but probably have access to the CD ROM (not sure if a CD Burnen app) PC available and might have a Win 10VM (of a Proxmox host but no access to the CD writer). Would either of these work with the Spinrite.exe?
