  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

Spinrite support for eMMC drives

I ran Readspeed on my economy Lenovo Ideapad laptop and got the following message “Speedread didn’t find any ATA or SATA hard drives with IDE or AHCI controllers.”
It turns out that my laptop has a eMMC drive. So I checked with the Spinrite Development Roadmap and eMMC is not mentioned at all. The drive storage is soldered to the system board and is not replaceable so having the capability repair it via software can save the computer. Maybe it can be included in v7.3.

@Steve will have to check into that, no doubt. I am curious though, can you share any info that Windows shows in the hardware devices list?

The Windows device manager, under Disk drives shows "Ramaxel 64GB SCSI Disk Device"

I agree. While I am sure Steve would love to dive into something like this, it would take him away from SpinRite 6.1 development, which applies to a much wider "audience" than eMMC. Steve commented (a while back) about taking some time, after SR 7.2 is done, to look into various SpinRite enhancements. I would certainly think this could qualify as such.
