  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Spinrite Can't Run on Razer Blade Stealth 2016?

Hello,

I have Spinrite 6.1. To use it, I ran spinrite.exe, and selected the "Install Spinrite on USB" option. I did this on a separate laptop than am trying to use it on. I then ejected the drive, and removed it from my computer.

I then connected it to a Razer Blade Stealth, 2016. In the RBS's BIOS, I did the following:
  1. Security --> Secure Boot Menu --> Set Secure Boot to [Disabled]
  2. Boot --> CSM Parameters:
    1. Set Launch CSM to [Enabled]
    2. Left the following alone
      1. Boot Option Filter [Legacy Only]
      2. Launch PXE OpROM policy [Do not Launch]
      3. Launch Storage OpROM Policy [UEFI Only]
      4. Launch Video OpROM Policy [UEFI Only]
      5. Other PCI device ROM priority [UEFI OpROM]
Apart from those options, I do not see anything that allows me to select "Boot Mode: Legacy", or such as I've seen from other BIOSes.

So anyway, I saved and exited. On bootup, pressed F12 to see the boot options. The USB showed up as "UEFI: SanDisk, Partition 1". Selected it, flashes black for a half second, then goes to BIOS.

It does the same for Bootable, that other GRC tool. I have tried different USBs, and different USB ports.

I found a separate post suggesting that Legacy USB Support should be turned on, under Advanced in the BIOS. I do have that enabled.

Any thoughts?

  1. Launch Storage OpROM Policy [UEFI Only]
  2. Launch Video OpROM Policy [UEFI Only]
My read on these two options are that you might need to try changing them. It sounds to me like the storage (i.e. HDD/SSD) and video may not be presented to the system in legacy mode. (This seems like some sort of weird security maybe?)

Are there any options under that “Boot Option Filter” setting that might be enable USB port for booting?

If I remember correctly, the options were UEFI, "UEFI and Legacy", or Legacy Only. I did try doing just UEFI, and "UEFI and Legacy", to no avail.

I ended up running Spinrite on my desktop instead, as that was the only computer I have which would show the proper "USB: Sandisk" option when in the boot options menu. After that I was able to check the SSD, which showed no errors. Turns out (fun fact), if you have an Intel CPU, and are trying to use Intel's Optane SSDs (mine was a 32GB Optane/1TB variant), your Intel CPU has to be 7th gen or up. Mine is only 6th. So I couldn't even use the SSD in the laptop I was trying to run Spinrite on 🤦‍♂️. However, I would like to clarify that that was not the reason I started down this journey; instead, it was given to me by a friend after BestBuy warranteed it. Their issue was that their computer bluescreened with some error relating to the SSD, and it appears BestBuy was unable to find the cause of the issue. I had hopes Spinrite would be able to repair the drive, and maybe it did, but I am unable to verify the SSDs functionality with my current hardware.

I'm not sure how long they allow these threads to stay open, but if I have some time, I would like to dig into why Spinrite doesn't work with my RBS. I'll update this thread with my findings, if I am still able to respond later next week.

Edit: Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
