  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I'm working on some older machines, so thought I would try Spinrite 6.1 on them. I got them to boot the flash drive, but Spinrite would hang at the loading screen. One machine is a Lenovo H520 and the other is an old hp8000 elite. Initially I couldn't get the H520 to boot to the drive, but after messing up the BIOS Settings I reset the CMOS and then it started letting me choose to boot from it. The HP would boot, but would just hang at the loading screen too.

I'm using an old 16GB lightly used flash drive that was formated by your utility. I then tried a newer 256GB flash drive that I used Easy2boot v2.20 on then loaded spinrite on it. Then I can boot that flash no problem. But when I load spinrite it just hangs at the loading screen again.

I don't know which version of Spinrite i'm on. Its filename is sr61pr.exe. Is this the latest one?

Are you referring to the splash screen with the giant blue "6.1", or SpinRite's "Discovering System's Mass Storage Devices" screen?

Which one? There are several that can format flashdrives: ReadSpeed, InitDisk, and SpinRite.

I don't know which version of Spinrite i'm on.
If you open it in Windows, it should say toward the top. The most recent version is RC6. If you get an error about it being a DOS executable, then the only way to tell is by running it in DOS. You could also download it again to ensure you have the current version.
