  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I have downloaded today, Oct 1 2023, a pre-release version of SpinRite 6.1 from the preview download link provided in the dev newsgroup.
When I try to run it to create the bootable disk, I get a blue message saying "This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."
I have a Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 OS build 19045.3448

Please advise.

If you got the download link from where you should have, the newsgroup (I edited your post to remove the URL, which is not to be posted here) then you know how to access and post there. That is the ONLY place to receive any support for pre-release/dev versions of SpinRite. (Put another way, there is NO support here for any version of SpinRite but the eventual final release of 6.1, whenever that might occur.)

I will ask you which specific version you downloaded. I don't think it matters though, because there hasn't been one yet created that combines the complete (and working) DOS component with the complete and working Windows boot creation component. Put another way, you're too early to be conducting your test. You need to figure out how to make a FREEDOS bootable (hint, use the FREEDOS command line option of GRC InitDisk and copy your SpinRite.EXE onto that.)
