    Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use. The biggest change, as seen in the image above, is that the DNS Benchmark now has a traditional Windows application menu to more fully expose its many features. This release is also "Consultant License Aware" and GRC will now issue a Consultant version when owners have previously purchased four "Personal Use" licenses. If you have previously purchased four DNSB licenses, or if you wish to upgrade your "Personal Use" license to Consultant, GRC's purchase process will direct you through that process.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

I have a 10 TB WD My Book that needs to be looked at my Windows keeps asking me to format this drive and I want to see if running Spinrite will change the condition of the drive so that the data can be successful transferred to a newer better WD black drive. I have read that Spinrite doesn't work well with USB connected drives. So if I take the drive our of the My Book case and attach that drive to a eSATA connected container would that be a better way for my to use Spinrite on this drive. It connects to a SAATA PCIexpress 6gb add on card.

I used to have a manual that came with my first SpinRite purchase. I have no idea when I started using SpinRite but I read that manual because it provided a very clear and concise explanation of the topology and structure of the data area of the spinning hard disk. Does anyone know where that essay IS?? If so I would love to be able to read it again. I unfortunately can not find that pamphlet. I have a copy of Steve Gibson's Techtalk Anthology A Passion For Technology Having reread it I can't find that concise explanation. I am self taught and I can us a refresher.

If you can remove the drive from the USB and connect it via SATA, it should scan MUCH faster. SR6.1 has native SATA drivers.
Thanks Alan that is helpful. Although what I was looking for was a down and dirty discussion that Steve Gibson did of the drives architecture andfunctional descriptions of it fundamental processes. I appreciate your assistance.

That doesn't really exist any more, now that drives are 100% self-contained and run S.M.A.R.T. and other features (like NASWare) that are all proprietary and no longer communicated from the OEM to the end users.
