  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

The discussion in SN980 concerning Kaspersky software being banned from the united states begs the question; can/should we trust any US giant tech company which continue to prove to be untrustworthy by working with our government in direct violation of the 4A? Their fine print doesn't give them a pass...our terrestrial binary infrastructure, soup to nuts, is such a security mess by design!

'REVENGE' FROM THE GRAVE John McAfee claimed he was collecting files on gov corruption – and threatened info will be released if he ever dies

Just in case anyone's still concerned about GRC's newsletters tracking them after this week's episode... Have you ever seen another email signup URL that fits on a single line? If Steve wanted to track people, he could have done so using URL parameters like everyone else.

Well, so far have clicked on every link from the newsletter. One a week, to remind me to get the shownotes, open them in a new tab, and then read along with the video when it arrives in my podcast feed and rolls to the watch position, is nice.

It is a bit like trusting MS to secure a network or wifi...if I can't secure a door into my own house myself, I'm nailing it shut. Man simply isn't up to the burden of trust and faith they put in one another. Even if I trust Steve, how could I possibly know who he trusts? Plus, I like Steve. Why would I put such a burden on him?!?

I trust a full-blooded Great Pyrenees. That's it. That's my entire list of trusted beings.

I love that, I guess when people bring that issue of trust, I guess the question is trust for what? I trust Steve will provide alot good information regarding technology, science and science fiction and things that happen in the world that might have an effect on thing I care about. And I trust Leo and the rest of twit for different and similar reasons, including points of view or insights that I could not get anywhere else that I am aware of. But, for example, the last time I took a changeling math class, I was some what on my own. And far as other concerns I have in my life I not sure why I would or should trust GRC or twit for anything. But I agree, you can trust a good dog for alot of things in life. Love those furry friends!
