Steve sayeth: Most of the domains on the list are quite obscure. But I did try another one on the list because it caught my eye: “shakespeare.mit.edu”. I don’t know what’s going on there, but no one is home either via HTTP or HTTPS.

Don't know which browser you were using, but using Edge, that site prompts for a browser-based login. So if you somehow missed that it would look like the site is 'not home':

On Safari for macOS, I'm not even getting a login prompt.

Straight up to the home page, on HTTP only.

In my Firefox, which I have set to automatically upgrade HTTP to HTTPS I get the prompt for credentials. In Chrome, if I manually type the HTTP I get the content. If I manually type HTTPS I get the prompt for credentials. So it appears the site is an exception because it behaves differently based on how you connect.

Looks about right. Just tried with HTTPS and I did receive a prompt for credentials.

My favourite site in behaving differently is Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (https://www.bom.gov.au/). They have enough HTTPS to say they don't support HTTPS :(
