  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Recently on a sn there was a hint that the virus for covid could had a lab origin. Though it fits in the realm of possibilities, it is not only improbable but highly unlikely.

Here is a recent article talking about the origin of a precursor to the virus that caused the last pandemic. The electronics equivalent would be of making a modern cpu with the technology we had with the early transistors. The basics were there, but we way way removed from having the tools to be able build even a poor copy of a 2025 high end cpu. We also lacked the deeper understanding needed for the task

Let me Google that for me:

"consistory" is a typo, intending "conspiracy"?

noun. plural conspiracy theorists: a person who proposes or believes in a conspiracy theory. Distrust of the numbers is why one group of dissenters - government conspiracy theorists - grows during pandemics. Definition of CONSPIRACY THEORIST - Merriam-Webster

Conspiracy theories are explanations for events that suggest secret plots by powerful groups or individuals, often used when other explanations seem less likely.

They can be appealing because they offer structured narratives, explanations for confusing events, and may reinforce pre-existing beliefs, especially when official explanations seem inadequate.

However, they are often based on insufficient evidence and can be harmful. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Aspects of Conspiracy Theories:

• Definition: A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event that posits a secret plot by influential actors to cause the event. [1, 5]

• Appeal: They offer a sense of control, meaning, and belonging, especially when official explanations are seen as lacking. [3, 6]

• Belief: Conspiracy theories are often embraced due to a desire to understand complex events, a need to maintain a positive self-image, and the appeal of a "good vs. evil" narrative. [3, 7]

• Resistance to Falsification: They tend to be internally consistent and resist evidence against them, even when it is presented. [4, 8]

• Negative Connotations: The term "conspiracy theory" is often used negatively, suggesting the explanations are based on prejudice or insufficient evidence.

• Psychological Factors: Some psychologists link conspiracy beliefs to certain personality traits, cognitive biases, and a need to attribute events to powerful forces. [6, 7, 8]

• Social and Political Context: Conspiracy theories can flourish in times of social unrest, political uncertainty, and when there is a lack of trust in authorities. [1, 3, 9, 10]

Examples of Conspiracy Theories:

• Flat Earth: The belief that the Earth is flat rather than spherical. [2]

• Moon Landing Hoax: The claim that the moon landings were staged. [2]

• 9/11 Truth: The belief that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job. [11, 12]

• Covid-19 Conspiracy Theories: Various claims about the origin, nature, and treatment of COVID-19. [2, 13, 14]

• False Flag Events: The belief that certain events, like school shootings, are staged by crisis actors. [2]

Thanks for the perspective.

Indeed. One good example is vaccines causing autism, which was based on a very bad paper published by someone that was hoping to profit somehow from this misinformation. Too many scammers have since, and preyed on parents' despair. Since then it has bee fully proven false. Sadly this has been one of the themes during the covid-19 pandemic, probably by one or more of the factors you pointed out.

using other wikipedia links: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_lab_leak_theory, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_SARS-CoV-2. The tl;dr is Based on two different analyses, the authors of both papers concluded that the outbreak began at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market and was unconnected to any laboratory. Just because something promotes the discourse someone wants to promote, doesn't make it true. Correlation does not imply causation, and had it been another city, there might had been a university or another lab that studied viruses. Had the outbreak started in Atlanta, people would had blamed the CDC, DC they would blame Fort Detrick, Boston would be Harvard or NYC it would then be Columbia

As I suggested before, before the last thread was disabled: This forum is NOT the correct location to be discussing these topics, especially when there can be nothing but speculation because it's been more than 5 years and no trusted official result is available. Accordingly, please find another site to have these discussions if you must have them, but let's generally stick to technology and GRC products here, please.

To spell it out officially, if you continue to post here in this thread, or start additional threads on this topic here on this site, you will most likely suffer moderation.
