  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

This morning I watched the Dave's Garage episode on Spinrite 6.1 - what it is, how it works, what it can do for magnetic drives and SSDs. It really piqued my interest about the drives in my Windows 10 laptop and their state. Continuing to avoid work I spent time looking over the GCR site, watched Steve's Spinrite 6.1 demo video, eventually bought Spinrite 6.1, and got it booted up.

I ran a full Level 2 scan of both drives in my system. Not much happened for the primary boot drive but I use it as little as possible. The second drive though saw a big jump in front of drive performance!

Improved 169.2%!

So I figured I might as well run it again at Level 3 over the first 33% of the drive and damn if it didn't bring the drive back to almost full performance!

A total improvement of 215%!? I mean, I'm sold!

I'm looking forward to running this against all my drives, including some iffy magnetic drives that seem to have failed.

Awesome work, Steve! Thanks!

How old is that SSD drive that was measured
by SpinRite 6.1 as going slower than it could
be restored to?

The SpinRite 6.1 LOG 'Runtime' report will tell,
here's a few sample lines from some of my
SSD logs:

Type|Port|BIOS|Runtime|Size| Model | Serial
