  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

5.08: FIXES the crash bug I introduced in 5.07!

NOTE: The previous 5.07 pre-release lifted SpinRite's 137GB USB BIOS drive access clamp. BUT it also introduced a new bug that caused that release to crash whenever a BIOS drive encountered any error. THIS 5.08 pre-release fixes that bug. No one should experience any crashes with this release. EVERYONE using 5.07 should update to 5.08! There's one other new feature, see below...

MOSTLY, this release simply fixes the crash bug I introduced in 5.07.

The full list of fixes and improvements:
  • Fixes the USB BIOS crash bug introduced in 5.07.
  • Displays “(quiet)” in the upper-right of the screen whenever SpinRite is muted. At any time you can tap both SHIFT keys to toggle this and place the “quiet” keyword on the command line to start SpinRite in that mode.
As always, you may obtain this update by going to GRC's Pre-Release page, entering your SpinRite license serial number or transaction code and clicking the links to obtain your personal pre-release copies of either the full Windows/DOS SpinRite and/or just the DOS code.

(VirusTotal is very happy with this iteration with 0/69 detections.)

Thanks, all!
