  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Greetings all!

So, currently I use Documents from Readdle to read PDFs on my ipad. I’ve no complaints in that regard.

However, I like to occasionally copy all of the PDFs I have on my ipad on to my windows desktop machine so they’re available on my computer, and also to back them up in case something happens to the ipad.

I could swear that at one point, I could just connect Documents to my desktop machine via wifi and copy the whole pile of PDFs, file structure and all, on to my desktop.

Not any more. I have to recreate the file structure manually on my desktop, then copy the files to each individual folder. Documents nows transfers the files as a zip file, and there’s some upper limit so that I can’t even transfer all the PDFs in some folders but I have to transfer them in batches.

Let’s just say this is annoying. Especially since I know I used to just transfer the whole thing in one go. It took a while but I would start it and come back and it would be done.

I also used this to copy the files to my phone in case I wanted to access them that way. Same thing… I have to create the file structure on my phone and then transfer groups of PDFs to each folder.

Does anyone know of a better way? Something that would let me create whatever folders full of PDFs I want, and then transfer them in one fell swoop to my PC and back?

Thanks…

You could use a cloud provider and store the documents there; you’d have access from both platforms.

Nah. I want local copies. Anything in “the cloud” belongs to whoever is running your cloud service, and you can only get to it if they let you. Besides, I work in many locations with no connectivity at all, so even if I liked cloud storage I’d still need local copies.

I understand your objection, but just fyi you can conigure most cloud services such that local copies are always stored when copies are made to the cloud, so if you’re offline you’ll still have access to your documents.
