  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Steve,

I stumbled across Security Now! when it was in single-digits, went back and heard the previous episodes, and haven't missed one since. For quite a while I 'collected' every episode but now I know that I will never go back to listen to these more recent ones.
Back then I could understand everything you said, now much of it is above my pay-grade. But I get enough out of it to be worth listening to.

Attached is a potential picture-of-the-week for you. Only viewable in all its glory on a full-sized screen. Look at all those vintage screens. The top half is better than the bottom.

I have just finished running SpinRite on an old laptop that won't boot any more, but will load live disks no trouble. Then just after that I read on your FAQ page that SpinRite won't work with Ventoy. But that is what I have just done: that SpinRite is there on my Ventoy USB. It is right now processing a USB hard drive that I plugged into that laptop.

I recently came across the suggestion for those who want to stay with Win10: let Microsoft give you a bare-bones Win11 and move your present Win10 lock-stock-and-barrel into a virtual machine running in that Win11. Will that give protection from all the bad stuff that Win10 is no longer patched for?

You have provoked a little mirth at the expense of the word 'penultimate' meaning 'second to last'. Did you know there is an 'antepenultimate' meaning the one before that?

I have just finished Peter F. Hamilton's "Hole in the Sky". And waiting for the next book – on order now.

Welcome, I used to do a lot of fishing in NZ, but a bit too old for it now... best wishes to KiwiLand.
