  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

Apologies if this has been answered previously, I have a vague memory hearing talk about it on SN, not sure.
Would NAS support be a possibility in 7? e.g. I have an ancient USB Drobo plugged into a Raspberry PI running OpenMedia Vault. Would I be able to plug the Drobo into an x86 computer, boot into SpinRite, and have it recognize the drives in the Drobo? Or somehow get SpinRite to recognize the newer Synology (without shutting it down and running each drive using a SATA-USB adapter?

There is no ongoing design work for SpinRite 7 as it stands right now. The plans WILL change whenever Steve might get around to starting work, so the answer to your question is a guess at best, and basically unknowable.

Does the Drobo allow you to access drives in a JOBO setup? If not, I would doubt it.

I always forget there are Drobos that connect directly to a computer VIA USB, and not by network only. Don't know if Synology even makes a similar device. When I bought my Drobo (and later my Synology, some time after Drobo went bankrupt), I went the NAS route so I could avoid some issues that a DAS route could give me (also, it seems like 90% of the issues I have seen with Drobos seemed to be with people using the DAS version of the hardware)

Totally understand. More of a wish & a dream at the moment. Probably the answer will be not likely, but one never knows.

Yeah, I've had issues with both my NAS & DAS... For me, the DAS has fewer complexities, but the NAS has better support & functionality (if one has a working & booting operating system). I have a vague memory that there was a JBOD formatting option that was recommended against (back when the company still existed), steering people into their RAID solution that allowed a number of different drives to be used as one. FWIW, at the moment, it is just visible as one drive to the OMV I have it plugged into. I've shut it down and ran (various versions) of my purchased SpinRite on the drives separately, and I'm sure it has extended the life. Looking forward to the future.
