  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

I'm collecting SpinRite 6.1 logs. I wrote a PowerShell script that can parse these logs, which makes it easier to search them for specific information. If you're willing to share, I would love to have as many logs as possible 😁


You can find the logs in the SRLOGS folder on your SpinRite boot drive.

If you wish to submit them here, please create a ZIP file. If it is larger than 512 KB, you will need to upload it somewhere else, such as my GitLab page.

For someone NOT on GitLab, what's the best way to get their log files to you?

Also, do they have to be "complete" logs?...i.e. 100% of the drive tested?...or is an interrupted run OK?

Here are a few options. I'm open to alternative methods as well :)

ZIP them up and email them to contact-project+grc-community-spinrite-logs-42722961-issue-@incoming.gitlab.com
This will create a confidential issue. I will be able to see your email address. I will download the ZIP file, delete the issue, then add your logs.

I have a level 5 run on a used 4TB HDD active now and will gladly forward the log to you. My problem is I have no idea of how to find and copy the log after the run completes and I am prompted with "C:\".

Browse your boot media and look for a folder containing the logs.
