linkusedorexpired SR6.1

  • SpinRite v6.1 Release #3
    Guest:
The 3rd release of SpinRite v6.1 is published and may be obtained by all SpinRite v6.0 owners at the SpinRite v6.1 Pre-Release page. (SpinRite will shortly be officially updated to v6.1 so this page will be renamed.) The primary new feature, and the reason for this release, was the discovery of memory problems in some systems that were affecting SpinRite's operation. So SpinRite now incorporates a built-in test of the system's memory. For the full story, please see this page in the "Pre-Release Announcements & Feedback" forum.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I keep getting a linkusedorexpired when I try to download 6.1 for windows. I read the page it was on and I clicked on it that's what I get. 3 times. Trying to get the exe. So far I keep getting the zip file which Windows can't do anything with.

@Claude Stewart : Did you refresh the link download page each time you tried? Each page refresh will deliver a new set of "fresh" links. Since no one else has reported this trouble (through many thousands of downloads), something about your system must be different from others?

No I didn't but I did close the browser and started it up today and went back to your site and got the same message. I also opened Edge and got the same message. I always use Chrome.

Hmm. The only thing I can suggest is that you explain step-by-step what you did... which page(s) you visited and what you did at each page? You've summarized your actions, but not with sufficient detail to diagnose what's going on. :)

Starting fresh I clicked on upgrade to Spinrite 6.1. Then I put in my transaction code from 2004 in and clicked on get downlink. I then right clicked the executable program link. And got the same result. linkusedorexpired. Closed all that and went to GRC.com clicked on upgrade to 6.1 and entered my transaction code. This time I just clicked on the link and my download manager downloaded a file called sr6.1.exe when I clicked on that it said it was corrupt or unreadable. I backed out to the enter your transaction page and refreshed it. I then put my serial number in there and got the same result. I didn't realyy to buy a copy but I might I have got a lot of use out of 6.0 but not since the change in the windows bios.

The links are one time use only. It seems likely you have some anti-virus or other web extension that is "previewing" the link before you can even click on it. My suggestion would be to use a different browser, or a different computer completely. Assuming you can get it to work once, so you can get your software, then you can mess around trying to figure what is causing the problem. Because it's interfering with the EXE and not the ZIP, my guess will be anti-virus.

Which anti-virus do you use?

Just the one in Windows 11. But I did do what you thought of. Went out to the barn and used my Windows 11 computer that's about 1 year newer than my normal laptop. It worked just like it's supposed to. I now have a copy. The only thing that's different is one started out with Windows 10 and I installed 11 over 10. I just checked Windows antivirus protection history and there is an entry for today: setup Onedrive for file recovery in case of ransomware attack. Thanks everybody for your feedback.
