Just Discovered BlueSky old Twitter is back

  • DNS Benchmark v2 Release 5 with Consultant License

    Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use. The biggest change, as seen in the image above, is that the DNS Benchmark now has a traditional Windows application menu to more fully expose its many features. This release is also "Consultant License Aware" and GRC will now issue a Consultant version when owners have previously purchased four "Personal Use" licenses. If you have previously purchased four DNSB licenses, or if you wish to upgrade your "Personal Use" license to Consultant, GRC's purchase process will direct you through that process.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

I've never actively participated in LinkedIn in terms of actively adding contacts etc. I have noted from a distance that they've slowly expanded their scope to become a bit more like Facebook, but when properly credentialed professionals are having inconvenient posts outright censored then for me it's definitely pointless to be bothered with it. I'm probably not the only one who wonders why LinkedIn even exists.

What I have noticed in the last few days is that there seems to be a bit of a PR push for BlueSky, including a piece on one of the news channels in Australia. The weirdest thing for me is that teh story that went to air sounded to be outright incorrect in some of the points it was making against Twitter. In this TechCrunch article on Yahoo Finance, it talks up BlueSky's growth as enough of a trajectory to catch up to Meta's Threads. Threads itself was launched to much hype and an explosive spurt of traffic, which then shrank back. Some attested this to people protecting their brands by registering account names so that IP squatters couldn't. But this still pales in comparison with the size of Twitter/X.

What I can point out about Twitter (it's kinda hard for me to refer to it as "X") is that the communications happening on it was somewhat separated from the Trump 49% / Kamala 51% polling narrative that was throughout the rest of the legacy media and the other socials. The resulting landslide victory to Trump (312 electoral college thinggys vs Kamala on 226) subsequently put everyone into shock ... except for the Twitter brigade. For whatever you might not like about Twitter, it does seem to be the one place where you're not forced to wear blinkers.

FWIW: I've been receiving notes from Bluesky users asking “when” I'll be over there.

As the saying goes “Never say never” — so let's just say I'll be surprised if “never is ever.”

I noted an article (I don't recall where) saying that all of the “standard” trolls, spammers, gadflies and wannabes had now cloned themselves and had shown up over on Bluesky. So it's just a matter of time before that “social network”, too, becomes a useless mess.

And this is going to be a problem anywhere and everywhere until placing something into someone's inbox is not free — and I believe that's the proper solution: A user on the Internet should be able to set a cost to the sender for sending them something. Anything. And that “micropayment” should be transferred from the sender's to the recipient's account when placing anything into the recipient's inbox. If the Internet user is receiving too much crap they can increase the cost to send them something as a means of reducing the incoming. And senders can set a maximum amount that they are willing to pay for the privilege of placing their communication into someone's inbox.

This doesn't have to be much money, but it needs to be non-zero — unless someone really wants to receive all of the crap on the Internet. Sender's would not be forced to setup a payment account, but without one — without the ability to pay a recipient to accept their communication — their audience would be limited to those recipients who had not established a non-zero "cost-to-receive."

Looking again at the media articles that are popping up, I'm quite sure now that there is a bit of a campaign that has launched with not only promoting BlueSky but also casting shade on Twitter. Kinda what I had felt was happening based on what I had seen when I made my last comment.

If I had time it would be worth checking if those invites were genuine or the software had somehow gotten the ability to take advantage of the contacts list of members. Weirder things have happened in the past. But I just don't have the time for it.

I have a Bluesky account, but it is missing some basic functions that prevent me from finding it worth using.

  1. You cannot remove followers
  2. You cannot make your profile private
  3. Posts cannot be edited, you need to delete it and do it over again if you make a mistake
  4. No usable bookmark/save function​
