Installing spinrite on a zimaboards eMMC drive

    Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use.   • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

I have a zimaboard 232. Is it possible to install SR 6.1 on the eMMC drive of the zimaboard?
I got this particular zimaboard just for Spinrite and it only has 2 usb slots. Would be more convenient to boot directly off of it and save a usb slot.
The eMMC must be soldered directly on the board as there is no m.2 slot.
 
You *should* be able to manually install FreeDOS on the eMMC? Then copy your SpinRite.exe to it. (I only say should because I have never tried, but I feel like it might be possible. It depends entirely on whether the eMMC is visible to the BIOS.) https://www.freedos.org/

Note that it will require you to repartition and reformat the eMMC drive to install FreeDOS. You will lose the Linux it comes with.
 
I recently purchased a ZimaBlade, which still supports legacy boot but only has one USB port. I wanted to install FreeDOS directly onto the eMMC and found a video by Tech323_YT on YouTube.

SpinRite 6.1 only functioned under option 5, but ReadSpeed didn’t work because Steve made some memory modifications to the original FreeDOS, if I’m not mistaken.

The solution I discovered was to copy the same modified version of FreeDOS from the SpinRite USB stick to the eMMC using GParted (https://gparted.org/).

Here’s how you can do it:

1-) Follow the steps shown in the video
2-) Boot into GParted with the SR 6.1 USB inserted
3-) Delete the partition on the eMMC
4-) Copy the partition from the SR 6.1 USB to the eMMC (like a file copy and paste)
5-) Boot from the FreeDOS installer and select "Return to DOS"
6-) Run fdisk to mark the newly copied partition on the eMMC as active

Your ZimaBoard eMMC should now have the same FreeDOS version as the SR 6.1 USB.

I’m sure there might be a more elegant method, but this is what worked for me.
