  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I still believe it is bogus....
Reasoning... I bought 2, 4TB both have no MFG Logo on it.. Put it in External USBV3 enclosure... Validate... OK !!
then realize it had 2 different partitions.... From other threads, deleted both partitions, formatted it as NTFS.... Now only one parition... Still says 4TB
Test with validate again.... Same... OK... ??
So did speedtest Bit slow for an external USBV3, but not terrible..
Stated copying 100GB of data onto it....
In the meantime, opened up 2nd drive.(on anti static Matt/Workstation)... 2 large chips on one side, with a slightly smaller in middle of them.... no chips on other side..., and they are all scratched and painted over.... !!!!!

I would Love to reject these SSD's... but I don't seem to have a reason to do so... YET...

First one still passes Validate... ??? Put second one back together, and hoping for a suggestion as how to proceed...

Here's pix of before and after the partitions were removed and new partition formatted.... Did quick test on 2nd drive... It reports same exact, down to the serial number, as this first one did...
Suggestions?

eBay as posted before. Decent price but neither too good to be true nor full price. Price isn’t issue. Proving it is a true 4TB Drive, or a fake is the issue. At this point I’m thinking fake, but can’t prove it!
The large test copy blue screened 15 min ago. Gonna try huge file transfers again tomorrow, leaving Whats on there, there, in case that affects the copy.

I’m thinking no way 2 memory chips can equal 4TB, but that’s all that’s there, 2 large chips and one smaller, (controller?) and all info scratched and painted over on all chips. Both passes Validate as 4TB!
Now what ??
The out of box new shows 2 partitions: one obviously in Chinese,
Validate of either is identical: down to the serial number. both look and test identical.

Again,1 SSB has been partitioned cleaned & reformatted, other SSD has remained stock, other than 1 Validate test. BOTH report Fine as pix’s I posted above

So, how to prove it’s fake?

Without more information (such as a link to eBay), it's hard for us to judge what's going on. It's possible these drives are fake and doing something ValiDrive can't detect. The test you're running by copying large files to them is good. If you want a program that manages that for you, I recommend h2testw.

It's in a language I can't read (website) I don't know what word would be language change, if there is one... ??

The SSD under the H2test locked up about an hour into test. On reattaching to laptop, says it needs formatting to continue. Did. Don’t want to go farther on that one.

Just to be anal in my testing I pulled a Samsung SSD out of different external enclosure and put second Ebay SSD in.
Started a copy. It stopped responding 15-20 min into copy. I’ve had enough!

Informed seller (Individual, not company) & Ebay of issues. (I should have stopped when I saw both had same serial numbers) Learning experience!

Seller agreed to return. I go to print out label: says "No Returns" (this was over-ruled by Ebay-On way back!)
on shipping envelope: Label to me covers previous label- to his wife.
So: It was bought elsewhere, and resold.

For kicks, last night put an existing good SSD in same enclosure that failed under Ebay SSD, and tested both with Validrive and H2testw.... That SSD passes in enclosure that failed on Ebay drive. so system and enclosure is ok, follows Ebay SSD's.. Just trying to be through...
