  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I've tried running this on MacOS Sequoia using various iterations of Crossover but they all stall half way through the testing process i.e. after I've run through the "Rebuild Custom List" and the list of servers has been checked. No error messages the application just stops, the progress bar stops and the 'shuffling' of the various DNS servers ceases to be updated. I can exit the app and move to different tabs so it's not a full hang, just this part of the process looks to have hit a wall.

Any ideas? Anything I can check with DNS Benchmark (latest version) -- there don't seem to be any logs I can access -- or is this more likely to be a Sequoia/Crossover issue?

Thanks, Chris

Are you running V1, or the development release of V2? The version number is at the bottom of the window.

Ah, sorry, v1 (1.3.6668.0). I didn't realise there was a beta available; is this something I can sign up for & test?

Thanks

In theory yes, but it's way far away from being productively advanced, so is mostly just a visual shell at this time, so do you still want to be involved at that stage? The best option, if yes, is to get involved in the newsgroup surrounding the development. Start here https://www.grc.com/discussions.htm The newsgroup is grc.dns.dev . You should also be aware that the final product you will be testing is a paid product.

Thanks all; probably not then. I think that is possibly a MacOS Sequoia issue as this version of the GRC app earlier worked OK in Crossover on previous iterations of the OS.

Steve has made some changes in V2 including updating some of the controls used for drawing the screens. I noticed a problem running the new version under Windows XP, it may be that your OS is too new to handle the old controls in V1.

As far as involvement in the testing is concerned, this is currently limited to registered users of Spinrite as you have to enter your SR licence code to download the test versions of DNSB.
