  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Been a long time listener and very much admire the exceptional show and offerings.

Only noted the newsgroups https://www.grc.com/discussions.htm on your website recently. Read all the instructions and downloaded Gravity but when I try to send to grc.test it keeps failing. I have tried different ports and mailboxes and still no luck.

Error: Posting to grc.test failed 440
Details: 440 Posting not allowed

Just wondering if there are any better instructions to follow (I have tried searching but not having any luck so far).

Was unsure whether that is the same (or a mirror) to this Forum.

You need to create a Cecil-ID.

1. Set the server address (host name) to "news.grc.com".
2. Set the port number to 119 (should be default) and disable any option to use a secure connection. <== CHECK THIS

You then need a CECIL-ID to post and cancel messages:

3. Set the login method to "Username and Password" and enter identical strings into the Username and Password fields to serve as your CECIL-ID. Pick something unique and stick with it as the first 29 characters becomes your server identity.
4. Set your posting Name to whatever you'd like to use.

Remaining non-critical steps would include:

5. Set your E-Mail address to some string. Many people enter a fake e-mail address here, such as "yourname@email.invalid"
6. Optional: Enter or Add a "Reply-To" field containing a real e-mail address, if you wish.

Odd that https://www.grc.com/discussions.htm makes no mention of Cecil-ID?
What is Cecil-ID and where do I get it?

My question was just to check that grc.test has not been disabled on purpose. Can somebody post something to test?

Cannot see any options to disable secure connection...
I presume port 119 is for nntp only although I have tried various different ports suggested for SMTP (or maybe that is my mistake)

No it doesn't mention anything about Cecil-ID because it doesn't need to if you follow the instructions PRECISELY (which means you first have to read them, every one of them).

The key: The username and password are a SINGLE unique ID which you make up. Read that again: USERID == PASSWORD. If you get that right, that should be the only step you need to get right to be able to post.

You could try a different news reader, some people find XanaNews to be a little less overwhelming: https://github.com/graemeg/xananews

Thanks...

Thought I had read instructions initially and did try that, but your last response made me second guess my actions so I tried again. (It worked)

To hopefully make it clear to any others that might get stuck at the same point I did, I am including this screenshot and would suggest it might be handy adding that into instructions.

Wondering Cecil-ID was suggested if not an option or needed?
