  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I understand I need to turn off secure boot and put the machine in legacy boot mode . . . but I can not find the option to do the later in the bios. Can anyone assist me? Did I waste my money buying SR to try to fix a machine that can't even run the software?

The bad news: The Alienware Aurora R12 appears to be UEFI boot only. Thus SpinRite 6.1 cannot boot or run on this machine.

The good news: You have NOT wasted your money!
GRC has a no questions asked refund policy. :) Just send an email to sales2024@grc.com
Or see also: https://www.grc.com/cs/customerservice.htm

Also: The free BootAble utility tool is intended to verify BIOS and FreeDOS booting before buying SpinRite.

Great news . . . well, at least the 2nd half . . . but I'm seeing this almost 3 weeks later. Have I missed the return window?

@DanR is correct, @PhotoJoeCA ... There is no return window. If you purchased SpinRite and find that you have never been able to obtain any value from it, no one here (at GRC) will argue against refunding your purchase and canceling your lifetime license. Our philosophy is that if we didn't get you now, we'll hopefully get you later. And, in fact, SpinRite 7, which will run from Windows, will work just fine on your machine. But since we will be asking SpinRite 6.1 owners who purchased SpinRite some time ago to pay to upgrade their license to v7, if you cannot use SpinRite 6.1 at all now, you would save money returning it and then purchasing SR7 later. 👍🏻

sales2024@grc.com is not a typo?
I've written a few now and have not received a response.
