  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

SpinRite steps
Dell G7 7588 Intel-based laptop WILL run SpinRite.

Specs:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

My steps:

1. Suspend Bitlocker, or else have the recovery key nearby, as you would need to enter it after re-enabling Secure Boot when finished with SpinRite.

2. Boot PC and press F2 several times to get into the BIOS.

3. You'll need to turn PTT off, disable secure boot, enable legacy ROMs, turn UEFI off and change the boot sequence to Legacy External Devices (not necessarily all in that order), then reboot the PC.

4. When the Dell logo appears, insert the SpinRite bootable USB drive, then enter your boot password and press Enter.

5. The SpinRite splash screen should appear.

6. When you're all done, you will have to reboot into the BIOS and undo all the above settings to get things back to normal, especially if you are using Bitlocker on your drive(s) like I am.

7. I read elsewhere that the next version of SpinRite will be designed to work without having to go through the above steps, since more and more PC's do not have the ability to bypass secure boot for security reasons. It will also have the ability to process externally connected USB drives, of which I have many (both HDD and SSD types.) I am waiting with bated breath!

Right! That would be SpinRite 7 Pro. :) It is a ways off, however. :(

SR 7 Pro will be dual (UEFI and BIOS) boot, with native driver support for external USB drives and internal NVMe drives.

It will also have the ability to process externally connected USB drives
Steve plans a quick SpinRite 7 Win App, running in Windows background, for scanning external USB drives using Window's native USB drivers. Presumably not that far away?
I am waiting with bated breath!
So are we all!!! :)
