Just an FYI from a Spectrum cable customer.
Recently, my cable modem died. I had a spare sitting around and was able to swap in the backup with only a quick call to Spectrum to give them the MAC address. Then, I went shopping for another spare modem. For speeds under 500 Mbps, there is now one and only one modem on the Spectrum list of allowed devices.
Technically, the list includes two modems, but one is so old that new units are no longer being sold. The only choice is a Netgear CM1000 whose regular price is $230. There are other allowed modems but they are all combination modem/routers.
Having a modem fail enforces the strategy of having a separate modem and router; replacing a router is a much bigger deal.
