  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Recently downloaded Spinrite 6.1R2. Ran it on a Win 7 machine, selected "Create ISO or IMG File", saved as ISO.
Copied to a Ventoy drive. When I try to run it I get the Spinrite splash screen, then the screen goes blank with only
a flashing cursor.
I tried the same steps with 6.0 and all worked fine.
I will try burning directly to a CD to see if that works.
In the meantime, any ideas as to why 6.1R2 isn't running but 6.0 is?

UPDATE: burning the iso to a CD works fine. Guess I need to look into Ventoy......

Wow that is good, I heard Leo say something about Ventoy a while ago and I had never heard of it. I set it up from a Linux laptop and and copied a linux mint, debian, Image for Linux, Windows 7 and Windows 10 ISOs to the pen drive and it worked on two of my computers. One of the them the Windows 7 installer could not find the hard drive for some reason. I was happy to hear about it because I was planning to try and use Linux more often, but I still use Windows too so that might lead to many re-installs. I tried using Ventoy on my main machine, however no mater what ISO I picked it would just lock up either on the graphical screen or with the blinking cursor. I was going to try and see if I could find a solution because I wanted to use it on my main machine. Perhaps this Easy2Boot will work without much effort, that would be nice. I also found a project called iVentoy which as I understand will boot an ISO as a pxe boot. That would be a big advantage. I am not sure if there are other projects that do what iVentoy does. Perhaps there is some way SR 6.1 can use a iVentoy type thing to do a network pxe boot. If anyone know of other solutions of putting a collection of ISOs in one place as boot media for OS installation or maintenance, we should have a list.
