  • DNS Benchmark v2 is Finished and Available!
    Guest:
That's right. It took an entire year, but the result far more accurate and feature laden than we originally planned. The world now has a universal, multi-protocol, super-accurate, DNS resolver performance-measuring tool. This major second version is not free. But the deal is, purchase it once for $9.95 and you own it — and it's entire future — without ever being asked to pay anything more. For an overview list of features and more, please see The DNS Benchmark page at GRC. If you decide to make it your own, thanks in advance. It's a piece of work I'm proud to offer for sale. And if you should have any questions, many of the people who have been using and testing it throughout the past year often hang out here.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I have version 2, release 4 of the DNS benchmark.
Whenever I run it the "Conclusions" page always keeps saying "Be sure to re-check this page!"
I leave it for multiple hours and still the same

I think that you will find that it says that you should recheck this page " if you make any changes to your networking". The conclusions will not change unless you run the benchmark again.

It has always just been saying this. I never saw a conclusion

What does your Tabular Data tab show right now at the same time
Conclusions tab shows apparently the pre-Benchmark introductory
explanation?

@gemal The screens you show are what I would expect to see BEFORE any benchmark has been run.

What does the Response Time tab look like?

@gemal This looks like all you have done is verify internet connectivity.

You must run a benchmark to see results. Click the [Run Benchmark] button!

Yup, your Tabular Data is empty, it should look like this during and
AFTER a Benchmark:

Benchmark is not automatic ( unless we run the command line
/AUTO ), so we need to review all tabs, and options, confirm we're
looking at whatever we want tested with whatever settings we
want to test with, then click [ Run Benchmark ].

@gemal's experience raises an interesting point that hadn't ever occurred to me before.

Perhaps upon first starting up and completing the initial DNS server characterization, a little prompt window should ask whether its use now wishes to run the benchmark? As we know, those who are familiar with the tool appreciate being able to browse around at the loaded servers, see what's dead, what's sidelined, etc. But since most of that browsing is optional and things like sidelining and speed, etc. default to useful settings, most users would probably just want to run the benchmark?

As an alternative, what about highlighting the Run Benchmark button?
Also, what about putting a message on the Tabular Data and Conclusions pages like "You haven't run the benchmark yet!"?

Considering how important the run benchmark button is to the overall function of the program, it makes little sense to me to "hide" it on one specific sub-tab of the UI. It should probably be a bigger button that the user cannot escape until after they actually press it ;) Alternatively, now that we have a new menu system, maybe a top level menu item needs to be "Run Benchmark"?

Additionally, there is a clue in what the user above wrote... They waited for something to change and nothing did. So the UI could notice the user hasn't run the benchmark after some amount of time (5 to 10 minutes) and then pop up a reminder/explanation that they need to do so. (If implemented, allowing this feature to be disabled in the INI file would make sense for the more advanced users who would otherwise be annoyed.)
