  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

So I was just wondering if InControl can keep me on Windows 11 22H2? Because I saw the old forum post about it not being able to keep you on a version that has gone 60 days past its EOS, which 22h2 is.

But that thread was from two years ago so I'm wondering if that has changed at all.

Yes, it will. When Steve developed InControl he spent an unanticipated amount of time researching the very convoluted way Microsoft controls Windows updating in the Windows 10 (and 11) registry. InControl takes all of that into account.

I believe the post in question was from a user with InControl properly configured, where Windows was informing him that a new version was available, while InControl was still blocking its installation.. Normally this should not happen.

That said, there is always the possibility that Microsoft could change/ignore its own rules at any time and get around InControl. I am not aware this has happened. Yet.

As I recall, 22H2 and 23H2 are virtually the same software, so there's not really any reason to not upgrade to 23H2 if that's an option. This would buy you an extra year of supported updates, in theory at least. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/windows11-release-information

24H2 is being rolled out now, and will be the only supported version of Windows, but it also currently is known to have some issues that may be worth avoiding for some months yet.

Oooh, thats good to know. I was planning on just setting InControl to target 23H2 if staying on 22H2 wasn't on option and I might still do so knowing that now. I'm new to using InControl because of wanting to dodge 24H2 for the moment.
