  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

    To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

    GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

    The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

Throughout the show, Steve has given several switches to tweak the browsers. However, we mgiht take advantage of these then, but sometimes we need to reset the browser (which already had to do). Any chance of having these listed somewhere on grc.com?

They're in the transcripts (and for something like browser configs, the Show Notes, too!), so you should be able to find them pretty quickly with a search on grc.com :)

Often, the "hidden options" in browsers change from release to release, as well. Some are longer-lived than others, though, so I can see your point. Still, a search on grc.com/securitynow.htm ... use the search bar in the upper-right corner. Depending on the browser you're looking for, type browser flags 810 (if looking for something mentioned in episode 810) or omit the "browser" and use about:config (for firefox) and/or flags (for a chromium-based browser).

If you get results, there should be a list with "All" and "Security Now!" listed with the results underneath. Click Security Now! to limit the results to episodes of Security Now! and what's listed might be what you seek. If not, try other numbers (or multiple numbers for multiple episodes, but the search seems to default to AND, so you'll need " OR " (without the quotes) between each of the numbers). That seems to work well for me (I've been testing it).

I think this is a very good idea. Now, we just need someone with a lot of time on their hands to compile a list. Anyone?
