  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

BootAble not booting

Hello to all!

I am trying to figure out how to get the usb stick setup with BootAble to boot. I have an AceMagician minipc with American Megatrends
Bios v2.22.1282. I have disabled "Secure Boot", set the legacy boot mode, and put "USB" in the first spot of the boot order. Unfortunately,
the computer never boots off the usb key. The computer recognizes other USB keys on bootup, but not the BootAble one. Any help
would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Maybe use Rufus and create a FreeDOS bootable drive and see if that boots

Did you enable the CSM? You NEED a Compatibility Support Module to boot the BIOS.

The original poster says they “set the legacy boot mode” so I assume they mean the system has a CSM and it’s been set to On.

To me, that just sounds like a "which types of boots are permitted" option on the Boot Options screen. If so, that would not be the CSM setting.

On my machines, I don’t even see the legacy boot options unless legacy / CSM mode is enabled. But I have no idea if that’s universal.

Apologies for the delayed response. I thought I had set to be notified of responses to this post. Obviously operator error! Lol.

In the Bios setup, under the "Boot" menu is "Boot mode select" which is either UEFI or Legacy (Legacy was set). Under "Fixed Boot Order
Priorities" I have the USB Device set first. I looked through the options and didn't see anything to enable CSM. Is that something that should
be there and I'm missing it or is it possible that the option doesn't exist? Thank you both for your help.

Just tried that, but it didn't boot.
