Beyond Recall

  • DNS Benchmark v2 Release 5 with Consultant License
    Guest:
If you own any earlier release of our DNS Benchmark you may immediately download its release #5 replacement. Running an earlier release will detect the new release and help you upgrade.

Although this release is cosmetic, appearance matters and affects ease of use. The biggest change, as seen in the image above, is that the DNS Benchmark now has a traditional Windows application menu to more fully expose its many features. This release is also "Consultant License Aware" and GRC will now issue a Consultant version when owners have previously purchased four "Personal Use" licenses. If you have previously purchased four DNSB licenses, or if you wish to upgrade your "Personal Use" license to Consultant, GRC's purchase process will direct you through that process.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

I was just wondering if Steve is ever going to sell his "Beyond Recall" Disk wiping software? I Keep lying everywhere on my hard drive and it might be easier to clean things up with help from people like Steve Gibson. I keep trying to do the right thing, we all learn alot from Martha Stewart and similar work, Abhay Bhushan and similar work, Tom Brady and similar work. What I am really want is to wipe as many gigabytes/terabytes as possible per unit time. So when can we buy "Beyond Recall"? Ok, I am going to spend my time in some way no one will ever know will ever no about. Remember Gibson Research, create it real and keep it for profit.

Steve is dealing with life the last while. He is "building" his "final resting place"... i.e. renovating a condo for him and his wife that is intended to be the last place they (or he anyway) will be living in. It's probably kept him too busy to do much development. Hopefully by 2027 he'll be all set up with a new and improved office work space and will have time to pursue the projects he has planned.

In the mean time, you should look into your device manufacturer's (the drive OEM) software to see if it has a wipe utility. SSDs definitely all have the means to "zap" the entire drive at once, in a very quick fashion.

Why wipe?

To reuse the drive?

To prevent unintentional or malicious discovery, ever?

I would WAG it will be Q1 or Q2 of 2027 before Steve starts work on Beyond Recall v1. As noted, Steve is on hiatus getting himself and his wife moved into and settled in their new home. Per comments Steve made this was thought to be about a 2 month effort. If that is so, then it would be about Sep 1, 2026 give or take before Steve is back in the saddle again at GRC. First up is a quick polishing of a few bits on DNSB v2. Then ValiDrive V2. And then Beyond Recall V2. Hence my Q1-Q2 2027 WAG.

One quick way . . .
- Manually delete all folders and files on the drive (a quick reformat would also accomplish this)
- Write some large innocuous files to the drive. They could be video files, large EXE files, large binary blobs, etc. Maybe write a few smaller files at the end of the drive to finish filling it
- Manually delete all of those those files. Now the drive is MT with all previous sensitive data overwritten and gone.

We can delete whatever, including a simple repartition and reformat,
then let free Glary Utilities or the equivalent wipe free space.

I tend to reuse drives, but if that's not your goal, have fun taking it
apart and playing with the platters.

;-)

It all depends on your goals and the resources, including time, like,
overnight?

So, tell us more.
