ACER NITRO 5 UEFI cannot run Spinrite 6.1

  • DNS Benchmark v2 is Finished and Available!
    Guest:
That's right. It took an entire year, but the result far more accurate and feature laden than we originally planned. The world now has a universal, multi-protocol, super-accurate, DNS resolver performance-measuring tool. This major second version is not free. But the deal is, purchase it once for $9.95 and you own it — and it's entire future — without ever being asked to pay anything more. For an overview list of features and more, please see The DNS Benchmark page at GRC. If you decide to make it your own, thanks in advance. It's a piece of work I'm proud to offer for sale. And if you should have any questions, many of the people who have been using and testing it throughout the past year often hang out here.
    /Steve.

  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Hi everybody, I have an (old??) ACER Nitro 5 laptop that is UEFI only (and not changeable) system.
I know there's something wrong with the internal HDD so, as I wasn't able to boot from DOS with Spinrite 6.1, I dismounted the HDD, brought over a second much older machine that used Windows 7 and is DOS enabled but I wasn't able to run spinrite this was the message on SR 6.1:

This is my HDD:

Of course, seen that message I stopped everything and mounted back again my HDD (is not boot disk, only DATA) do my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45-R0LY / 32GB (Year: 2021).
Is there a not too complicated way to run Spinrite over it?
Is it correct the message SpinRite outputs trying to access the DRIVE 1 (the barracuda 2TB) ?
The HDD runs... (I'm just using it on my MAIN laptop) but I'm afraid has some troubles as sometimes is lagging and taking too much to respond...

BTW, how much time is missing to have 7.1 Steve?? I've being following you since the first security now, and SR 6.1 is great, but we'd need an easy way to deal with those new trash... ehm... fantastic UEFI machines as we have non chance to buy a non UEFI now as far as I know.

Thanks a lot

@LuxNews You seem to have your SpinRite versions mixed up? As Colby noted, the screen shot is from SpinRite 6.0.

The message "MBR followed by EFI" means that drive is GPT formatted. SpinRite 6.0 is NOT compatible with GPT formatting. SpinRite 6.1 however, will work with GPT formatting just fine.

If you do have SpinRite 6.1, please try that on the Windows 7 machine. SpinRite 6.1 WILL work (and scan that drive) on that Win 7 machine! :)

Thanks a LOT, you were right I mismatched the CD SR version!!!
I'll try to dismount again and redo the tests with the real SR 6.1
I'm so sorry for disturbing you unnecessarily!
Thanks so much!

@LuxNews As Colby said, no worries!

If you would, please post the results of a SR 6.1 scan of the drive on your Win 7 machine?
