  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Hello Steve --
I simply wanted to say thank you for your over 40 years of work in the micro-processor and later PC world. I was reading your column in Byte back in the 70's and have been an on and off visitor to your site (mostly to test the security of my home network) for years.
Thank you for reaching out with this opportunity to upgrade SpinRite. It had been quite useful throughout my era of mechanical hard drives, and now I can put it to work on the SSDs.
Thanks for all you have done. It's kind of cool (to me) to have had a relationship (not personal, of course) with one of the pioneers in the industry that continues to change our world.
Be well, and keep on keeping on.
Best Regards -- Doug Sands

Thanks so much for your very thoughtful note. I really appreciate it. I've been blessed with loving to do work that's been useful to others. The primary message of that email is that I'm not done yet! 👍 So stay tuned!

(You initially used your SpinRite serial number as your username here. That was a neat idea, but it must be kept private. So before your posting went public I edited your username to your own name, which I was sure you would not mind since you used it to sign your note.)

Thanks again! We have a lot of fun in store!
