  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Just started running 6.1 on an older desktop (3.5 inch floppy drive old)
Booting from a 128MB USB stick, created by Windows 7 Spinrite 6.1
The disk is a 2016 ST800AS002 removed from a failed 8TB "Seagate Backup Plus Hub"
Did a level 3 scan that took around 40 hours (a lot better than 40 days :)
It was not yet completely frozen. The last Graphic position was still blinking .oO
With considerable delay, it allowed 2 display advances, then froze.
Not even escape worked, so force power down.
Then did a successfull level 2 starting at 99.99% and a level 3 starting at 99.90%

All is well really - just a little confusing.
Waiting on Amazon for a new case as that is what died.
I took photos of the screens, but a text file is so much better.
Would it write the log if I booted from the floppy?

SR 6.1 only writes the log when it finishes. If you have rebooted, or even restarted SR in the mantime, any log entries will have been lost as they are only held in RAM until the end.

That is unusual. You could try running a memory test, such as MemTest86+.

Did SpinRite find a lot of bad spots in the drive? It's possible the log file had gotten very large. It's supposed to handle that, but maybe something went wrong this time.

If you want to post any pictures here, they will need to be below 512 KB each.

SpinRite writes to the boot media. Did you remove the boot media during the run? (Including removing and replacing it?)
I don't think so. I'm doing another big drive that will be finished in 10 hours.
Will see what that does.

It was finished except for writing the log.
Here is an OCR of one of the photos I took:

work remaining - completed
megabytes: 0.000 8,001,563 .00 analyzing
%: 0.000% 100.000% unprocessed
time: 0:00:00 46:19:17 processed
sector status key
R recovered
defective
unrecovered
Use the left and richt arrou laus

This program deletes all the formatting tabs/spaces I added to align things.
Shouldn't have bothered :-(
Here is the photo:

I let Spinrite's memory test run a while. Does it ever complete and stop? Will try a different test tonight.
All spots showing good except the very last one that was still flashing the .oO
Screen capture is 642KB. Will reduce resolution and do another.

It will run forever unless/until the user stops it.

Unless SpinRite is started with the Auto command line switch. Then SR's memory test runs for 60 sec after which SR proceeds.

Got this message again on the third drive I tried (8TB Hitachi HDS5C4040ALE630)
Both the Smart Monitor and Graphic States showed all green (unlike the Seagates.
I think I pressed Enter this time instead of Esk so it didn't freeze.
But FreeDOS was messed up, so the problem may be here rather than SpinRite.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say it looks like your USB drive is disconnecting. It could be a problem with the drive itself, the port your plugged it into, or the motherboard. I recommend installing SpinRite on a different flashdrive and seeing if that helps.

I completely agree. And if the problem persists with a different drive then try a different USB port if possible.
