  • BootAble – FreeDOS boot testing freeware

To obtain direct, low-level access to a system's mass storage drives, SpinRite runs under a GRC-customized version of FreeDOS which has been modified to add compatibility with all file systems. In order to run SpinRite it must first be possible to boot FreeDOS.

GRC's “BootAble” freeware allows anyone to easily create BIOS-bootable media in order to workout and confirm the details of getting a machine to boot FreeDOS through a BIOS. Once the means of doing that has been determined, the media created by SpinRite can be booted and run in the same way.

The participants here, who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience, their successes and some frustrations with booting their computers into FreeDOS, have created a valuable knowledgebase which will benefit everyone who follows.

You may click on the image to the right to obtain your own copy of BootAble. Then use the knowledge and experience documented here to boot your computer(s) into FreeDOS. And please do not hesitate to ask questions – nowhere else can better answers be found.

Thanks, I will check out the Keaton film. The trick with the glass is called Pepper's Ghost and is the basis for the ghosts in the Disney Parks' Haunted Mansion ballroom scene. It was created by Imagineer Yale Gracey (hence the name of the building; Gracey Mansion). Gracey was a member of the Magic Castle and donated a small model of the effect to the Castle (it's on display in the cellar).

If I recall correctly from Wikipedia, Keaton did not say how he made that scene until decades later. Keaton did some amazing special effects on film. I read that in The Playhouse (another must watch) his cameraman said what he wanted couldn't be done. Keaton figured out how to get 8 copies of himself dancing on a stage. He played almost every part in that film himself There are a lot of mirror effects in The Playhouse as well. Talking about it I have to pop the DVD in and watch it again!

I did watch the DVD with The Playhouse on it. I mis emembered some of the details. Keaton had 9 copies of himself on stage at once, not 8. Also he did use mirrors in it but no special effects with them aside from adding to the confusion. I did remember some things watching the rest of the DVD. The Keaton family was friends with Houdini, they both had vaudeville acts at the time. The beginning of another Keaton short called Cops starts with a quote from Houdini, "Love laughs at locksmiths". As I recall, Keaton's father said Buster got his name from Houdini. Keaton took a big fall in one of the acts and Houdini said 'that was some buster', and the name stuck.
