  • Larger Font Styles
    Guest:

Just a quick heads-up that I've implemented larger font variants of our forum's light and dark page styles. You can select the style of your choice by scrolling to the footer of any page here. This might be more comfortable (it is for me) for those with high-resolution displays where the standard fonts, while permitting a lot of text to fit on the screen, might be uncomfortably small.

@lawson23 Thank you very much. What happens if you: 1) Under MS-DOS don't run DrivEnum and just run rs (without /hashonly)? Twice? 2) Under MS-DOS run pci.exe? 3) Download RS-49k.EXE from https://www.grc.com/dev/SpinRite/ and run it under MS-DOS? Twice? Your and my motherboards are very...

Latest InitDisk does not create bootable USB

Yes, and MS-DOS just might work for you. freedos and MS-DOS are similar but different. On one of my computers ReadSpeed crashes on the second run under freedos but runs fine under MS-DOS.

Latest InitDisk does not create bootable USB

Go to https://www.grc.com/sr/faq.htm and follow the "How do I make a bootable USB thumb drive??" instructions to make an MS-DOS, not freedos, bootable USB drive. Then put whatever executables you want on it.

Please fetch DrivEnum.exe from https://www.grc.com/dev/SpinRite/ and add it to your USB drive. What is the result if you boot your USB drive, press <Esc>, run DrivEnum.exe, then run rs.exe? If that works what happens when you run rs.exe a second time? Are you running a Phenom CPU?

Resolved This system has a HIMEM.SYS (XMS) driver installed

ReadSpeed also comes without DOS and "Anyone who already has a bootable DOS environment can simply add the ReadSpeed DOS executable – RS.EXE – and run the program like any DOS utility." https://www.grc.com/readspeed.htm

Resolved This system has a HIMEM.SYS (XMS) driver installed

Lance, you're right. ReadSpeed should detect the version of MS-DOS you're using and give you the correct error message that this MS-DOS version has HIMEM.SYS built in and therefore ReadSpeed can't run. ReadSpeed should not be telling you to edit a CONFIG.SYS file that does not exist. I had...
